Voluntary Carbon Markets Workshop
The Ministry for the Environment hosted a Voluntary Carbon Markets Workshop on Friday 1 2008 August at Te Papa.
The workshop was attended by upwards of 100 attendees, from New Zealand industrial, energy, financial, legal, and consulting sectors. Speakers included representatives of the New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development, Meridian Energy, PriceWaterhouse Coopers, the Green Air Fund, GTripleC, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Air New Zealand, TZ1, carboNZero, Deloitte, Department of Conservation and other early movers in the Voluntary Carbon Market.
The purpose of this workshop was to share the experiences of those involved in the voluntary carbon market in New Zealand; to identify opportunities for New Zealand businesses in the voluntary carbon market; to encourage debate around the drivers to enter, and the challenges posed by, the voluntary carbon market; and to encourage credible and innovative responses to these challenges and opportunities.
The presentations and debate were extremely informative and insightful, and evidenced the need for further discussions on such challenging issues as whether emissions reduction efforts with double beneficiaries can be considered credible; and whether the proposed emissions trading scheme will make covered sectors "carbon neutral".
Feedback on the workshop has been overwhelmingly positive.
