Waste Technical Advisory Group

People operating a waste disposal facility will have obligations under the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme from January 2011. To help implement these obligations, the Ministry for the Environment formed a Waste Technical Advisory Group (Waste TAG).

The role of the Waste TAG was to provide advice to the Secretary for the Environment. The Waste TAG’s advice will relate to methodological issues in estimating greenhouse gas emissions from landfills.

The Waste TAG had knowledge, skills and experience relating to:

  • the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme
  • site-level estimation and measurement of greenhouse gas emissions
  • landfill gas capture systems
  • international methods for estimating landfill greenhouse gas emissions, including those prescribed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Members of the Waste TAG were from a broad range of backgrounds including landfill operators, expert consultants, local government managers and academia, as well as government officials.
